Who Were Sidhu & Kanhu Murmu?

Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu were Santhal leaders who, on 30 June 1855, declared rebellion at Bhognadih village in present-day Jharkhand. Alongside their brothers Chand and Bhairav and sisters Phulo and Jhano, they mobilised more than 10,000 Santhals against the British East India Company and oppressive zamindars and moneylenders. The uprising, known as the Santhal Hool (“hool” means revolution), is remembered as one of the first organised tribal revolts against colonial rule. The Story Behind Each Brother

Sidhu Murmu is remembered as the visionary who first rallied the Santhal villages, carrying the call for self-rule from hamlet to hamlet. Kanhu Murmu is celebrated as the strategist and battlefield leader who organised thousands of fighters armed largely with bows, axes and farming tools against a far better-equipped colonial army. Their younger brothers Chand and Bhairav, and their sisters Phulo and Jhano, fought alongside them — Phulo and Jhano are themselves honoured as among the earliest women freedom fighters of India.
